Competitive Event (individual) - McCord 205

Students will be asked to identify the animal phylum to which various specimens belong. If the specimen is a member of Phylum Chordata, contestants will be required to designate the vertebrate class to which the organism belongs.
For identification purposes, the specimens may be presented in any of the
following ways:
(i) entire specimen (macro? or microscopically viewed)
(ii) a diagnostic portion of the organism
(iii) a slide or photograph of the organism
(iv) a vocalization of the organism
(v) a product or artifact (ex. nest, egg, or fossil).
The specimens used will be selected from the following phyla land vertebrate
classes:
1. PORIFERA ? sponges
2. CNIDARIA ? jellyfish, corals, sea anemones, Hydra.
3. PLATYHELMINTHES ? flatworms
4. NEMATODA ? roundworms
5. ROTIFERA ? rotifers
6. MOLLUSCA ? snails, clams, squids, octopi, etc.
7. ANNELIDA ? segmented worms
8. ARTHROPODA ? joint?legged animals, with exoskeletons ? crustaceans,
arachnids
9. ECHINODERMATA ? starfish, sea urchins
10. CHORDATA: 7 classes
(i) Agnatha ? jawless fishes (Lampreys)
(ii) Chondrichthyes ? cartilaginous fish
(iii) Osteichthyes ? bony fish
(iv) Amphibia ? amphibians
(v) Reptilia ? reptiles
(vi) Aves ? birds
(vii) Mammalia ? mammmals
