One of the big
buzz-words at today's universities and colleges is "assessment." Faculty, staff and administrators are eager (or
encouraged) to assess what they are doing, why they are doing it,
if what they are doing is successful or if efforts should shift
elsewhere.
We should periodically reassess our personal lives, too. As a
result, we may end up reprioritizing how we spend our time and
energy. Realizing how the years zoom by and how quickly our sons,
Guy and Parker, are growing up, I recently went through such a
period of reassessment.
Although it seems impossible, I've worked in the Alumni
Relations Office for 10 years. I've enjoyed my work at APSU,
especially my work with our wonderful alumni. During Fall 1999, I
reached a crossroads in my life. With the support of Buddy ('81),
my husband, I decided to turn my attention to being a full-time
mother and wife.
Guy (12) and Parker (9) are busy with baseball, basketball,
football, soccer and school activities. It's a busy and exciting
time for them, and I want to share these special years with our
sons. Also, Buddy is real estate manager for Best Buy, which
requires him to travel quite a bit. I want to be free to travel
with him when the boys' schedules allow.
It's impossible to thank all the people I want to
thank--the
list would fill this entire issue of "Austin Peay." However, I
must thank my friend and mentor, Virginia Quick ('42), who taught
me the ropes and, even after her retirement, was here whenever I
needed her.
As an alumna, I intend to maintain a relationship with my alma
mater. Perhaps no one knows better than I how invaluable our
alumni volunteers are. Also, because I saw how much fun our
volunteers have and how much their support is needed, I encourage
you to join Buddy and me as alumni volunteers and Govs supporters.
Best wishes to each of you, and thanks for all the good
memories I've tucked away in my heart to take away with me.
Austin Peay alumni are tops!
