Dr. Hollie Walker Jr., 56, died of cancer Jan. 27, 2000 at his Clarksville home. He was buried at Evening Star Cemetery, Greenwood, S.C.

Walker came to Austin Peay State University Aug. 1, 1993 as chair and professor in the department of health and physical education, which is now health and human performance. He served as chair for four years before returning to the classroom full time as a professor.

He received his bachelor's degree from Claflin College, Orangeburg, S.C., in 1965, his master's degree from the State University of New York, Cortland, in 1973 and his Ph.D from the University of Utah in 1978.

He taught as an assistant professor of health sciences and safety education from 1978-86 and was promoted to associate professor in 1986, where he served until coming to APSU.

Walker was born Feb. 10, 1943, in Greenwood, S.C., to Hollie Sr. and Nancy Nicholson Walker.

In addition to his mother, who lives in Greenwood, he is survived by his wife, Joyce Gray Walker, who works for APSU's accounting services, one son, Orlando Walker, Memphis; and two daughters, Kimberly Walker English, Johnson City, and Sandra Walker, Clarksville.

Details are being finalized, but a scholarship fund for minority graduate students is being established at APSU in Walker's memory.
