Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription

Textbook (required):    ACSM’s Resources for the Personal Trainer 2nd Edition Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

                                      Supplemental Text required for all Wellness Majors:                                                 ACSM’S Guidelines For Exercise Testing and Prescription.                                      Sixth Edition. Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

Course Description

The course is designed to instruct the student on the basic physiological and methodological aspects of fitness assessment and exercise prescription, and provide practical experiences for health and wellness majors.

 

Course level and Credit

Upper level course offering three semester hours of credit

Prerequisite

Undergraduate course with 3 hours credit. Upper division status is required as well as HHP 4250: Exercise Physiology.

 

Course Objectives

 

1. To understand the importance of fitness and wellness in our society.

2. To understand the physiological responses of exercise.

3. To learn professional and appropriate fitness evaluation techniques.

4. To learn appropriate principles for prescribing exercise programs for various    individuals.

5. To learn appropriate leadership principles for fitness and wellness programs.

6. To prepare wellness majors for ACSM certification and jobs in the wellness and fitness industry.

 

Instructional Procedures:

Classroom lecture, accompanied by discussion, hand-outs, visual aids, etc. Laboratory experiences providing for practical application will be conducted in the human performance lab or outside the classroom.D2L assignments, and weekly personal coaching clients.

 

Student Evaluation

The student’s final grade will be determined by the total number of points accumulated throughout the semester.  The chart below shows the point value for each assignment. All assignments and quizzes must be completed by deadline (NO MAKE-UP on MISSED ASSIGNMENT)

1.      Twelve Position Article Summaries--12 @ 5 Points           = 60 Points

2.      Twelve Client Reports -----------------12 @ 5 Points           = 60  Points

3.      Exam 1 Chapters 6,7,8,&9-------------------------------           =100 Points

4.      Client Nutritional Project------------------------------- = 20 Points

5.      Physical Fitness Assessment----------------------------            = 20 Points

6.      Online Quiz Chapters 1 & 2-----------------------------           = 20 Points

7.      Exam 2 Chapters 10,11,14,&15------------------------            = 40 Points

8.      Video Team Assignment--------------------------------            = 20 Points

9.      Final Exam Exercise, Resistance/Flexibility---------            = 50 Points

10.  Final Project & Presentation--------------------------- =100 Points

11.  Homework-----------------------------------------------   =  10 Points

Grading Scale

450 - 500    A

400 - 449    B

350 - 399    C

300 - 349    D

Below 300    F

Attendance

Students are expected to attend each class session. Points will be deducted for non-participation and non-attendance. You will start with 15 points at the beginning of the semester. For each absence you will be deducted 5 points. For each tardy 2 points (5 or more minutes late). Class non-participation you can be deducted up to 5 points.

Academic and Classroom Misconduct

Students are expected to conduct themselves appropriate at all times. Academic and classroom misconduct will not be tolerated. Students must read the  A Code of Student Conduct@ in the new student handbook for an understanding of what is expected of them within an academic setting.  Due to the large number of students using phones and beepers, students are requested to turn off all electronic devices prior to entering class. Students who do not comply to this policy will be asked to leave. Children are not allowed in the classroom, according to new policies.
