Programs of Study in Writing

The Department offers writing courses and programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Courses include expository writing, technical writing, business writing, professional writing and editing, scriptwriting, and creative writing workshops in poetry, fiction, and non-fictional prose.

Undergraduate students majoring in English or other fields can add a writing minor to prepare for jobs in business, public relations, journalism, technical writing, editing, and publishing. The following minors are available:

For more information on our undergraduate or graduate programs in creative writing, contact Barry Kitterman or Blas Falconer. For more information on our undergraduate program in professional writing, contact David Major or Mickey Wadia.

For graduate students who wish to develop an emphasis in creative writing, the Department offers a special option in the English M.A. program, requiring completion of at least two graduate-level writing workshops and a creative thesis.

Also related to our writing programs are two creative writing journals, Red Mud Review, a student publication, and Zone 3 Magazine, a professional publication.
