Foreign Languages for Entering Students

Given the state requirement that all entering first year students have two years of high school study of a single foreign language, students usually enter at the second year, which is our intermediate level of studies. The elementary level of studies is for (1) students who come to us from other states where the study of foreign languages is not required, (2) nontraditional students who are without formal foreign language studies, (3) those who wish to refresh and perfect their studies, or (4) students beginning the study of an additional foreign language.

Students at the intermediate level experience an intensive review of the material covered in the elementary levels or in their secondary school instruction. This is effected via cultural and literary texts and a grammatical text for reference. ACTFL guidelines for proficiency are expected at the entry and departure stages of this level.
