Editor’s Note

It’s hard to believe that a whole year has passed since the publication of The Red Mud last year. As soon as there’s a moment to breathe, it’s time to pick up the reins and get cracking on compiling another wonderful piece of work.

We’re always moving. Be it ahead, behind or to the side, each individual being is always moving in some general direction. It’s hard to take those moments to watch something simple as a dog chasing a ball. Yet when we do, there is a moment of reflection: the paths that we have chosen and the ones that we will continue to chose. So often, we are afraid to live life to the fullest and often get bogged down with such minor details that we miss the most important things.

Compiling this magazine has been such an honor. On top of that, it really emphasized those smaller moments. Nights at Waffle House with Joe and Will are some of the best that I will come to cherish. I don’t think that I could’ve gotten past the first editing stage without either one of those guys. Both were ready with a joke and managed to remind me that I wasn’t doing this alone. I couldn’t be more grateful for better editors, or friends.

We read through a good deal of works and compiled this: The Red Mud Review 2009: Looking Over the Edge. There comes a moment where we all take a deep breath and face our fears, ones that lay right on the outside of normal sight. We should never be afraid and we should never back down. The works mainly this year have to deal with moving on in some shape or fashion. I’ve never been more proud to present such a talented group of writers from Austin Peay State University.

It’s been the best time composing this magazine. Let’s get to it.

Thank you all,

Erin McAteer
