The Presidential Research Scholars Program at Austin Peay State University requests applications for the next award period from May 1, 2010 to April 30, 2011.
Due to classes being cancelled on 1/29/2010, the proposal deadline has been extended to Tuesday 2/2/2010.
Promote independent research and creative activity with scholarly merit.
Support the incorporation of research training into the collegiate educational experience.
Encourage collaboration between faculty and student researchers.
Provide students with experience in a competitive proposal process.
The student applicant must be a full-time undergraduate student with support of a faculty member who is willing to serve as a research mentor.
The applicant is expected to be the primary author of the cover letter and research proposal with guidance and assistance from the faculty mentor (Application Sections I-II).
The project scope and magnitude should be sufficient to justify a work timetable of approximately 250 hours.
Research must be conducted at Austin Peay State University or at a field site under the direct supervision of the faculty mentor.
The student applicant must request evaluation by three faculty members, including the faculty mentor (Application Section III) and obtain a signature of support from the faculty mentor's Department Chair (Application Section IV).
For projects proposing the use of human research subjects, a copy of the APSU Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval for the project must be included. For projects proposing the use of captive animals, a letter showing the approval of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) must be included. Proposals may be submitted to PRS with these approvals submitted IRB or IACUC and pending review (Application Section V).
For projects requiring access to resources outside of Austin Peay State University, a letter of commitment guaranteeing access to those resources must be included (Application Section VI).
Each Presidential Research Scholar will complete an evaluation at the end of the project period and participate in the APSU Research Forum.

$3000 which may be used for student stipends, faculty stipends, and/or research expenses over the duration of the award period, May 1, 2010 to April 30, 2011.

The project represents an original research plan with the potential to make a contribution to the body of knowledge in the discipline in which the research will be conducted.
The project addresses a clearly defined problem with an appropriate literature review demonstrating the connections between the proposed work and the body of knowledge in the field.
The proposed research methods are appropriate and likely to produce meaningful results.
The project has a clearly-defined, feasible plan of work including a timetable for completion of various goals and a budget.
The proposal components are complete, well-written and clearly presented.
RESTRICTIONS
All awarded funds must be exhausted within the project period or forfeited.
Extensions may be requested for up to three months beyond the award period. Extension requests with an updated timeline and detailed explanation, must be received by the committee chair (Dr. Rebecca Jones, jonesr@apsu.edu) by February 1, 2011. Extension requests will be evaluated by the committee by April 1, 2011.
