News
The Committee met January 31, 2002.  Laurie, Veddah, Jessica and Debbie were present for the meeting.  Bylaws were reviewed and a general discussion evolved about a number of issues students are concerned about.  The Committee decided to meet weekly at noon on Wednesdays.  I will post minutes of the meeting as soon as possible.  We are investigating setting up a home page just for student organizations as a way of facilitating communication.  So look for that home page in the future.

News
As of March 27, 2002, the Committee has been meeting weekly except when the Social Work Club meets.  Bylaws are in the final stage of approval.  The Committee is also working on revising the Social Work Student Handbook.  This is a major undertaking and all social work majors are invited to share input.  Information about the work of the Committee is posted regularly on the bulletin board in Marks--first floor across from the drink machines.  Current members of the Committee include:  Kim Terry, Laurie Otto, Jessica Broadnax, Debra Aquino, Cathy Artis, Veddah Irizarry, Tri Taylor.  If you know these students, please feel free to share any suggestions you might have.

P.S.  Jose Castro has also been recruited to serve on the Committee.

News
On April 8, 2002 social work majors attended a meeting with faculty to discuss reaccreditation and to focus on any issues students wanted to raise.  Veddah Irizarry, President of the social work club moderated the meeting.  Issues raised included:  1) recommendations to explore changes regarding the requirement of (8 hrs) Human Anatomy and Physiology; 2) concern toward including more of a woman's perspective in the Human Sexuality course as well as making it more clinically focused to enable students to develop knowledge and skills for exploring sexuality issues with clients (students' perception seems to be that it is mainly focused on desensitization); 3) suggestions to have each class reviewed at the end of the semester by another faculty member or the dean; 4) concern about the relevancy of content in Law and Social Work and Human Sexuality to social work practice; and, 5) concern about the Fall, 2002 Introduction to Social Work in terms of level at which it is being taught.

A final recommendation was made to hold another meeting to continue the discussion.

News
The Advisory Committee met on April 10, 2002.  New officers who were elected in a previous meeting include:  Kim Terry, Moderator; Jessica Broadnax, Co-Moderator and Cathy Artis, Recorder.  Discussion focused on topics from the April 8 meeting of social work majors and the concerns/issues which were raised during that meeting.  The Committee also continued its discussion of changes to be recommended for the social work application form as well as the application process.  The Committee  would like to formalize the set of bylaws and have recommendations for changing the social work application by the end of the semester.
