Southern Sudanese foreign minister, leaders to meet at APSU March 3-5
2/28/2006

Two decades of bloody civil war within the Republic of Sudan ended in Nairobi in January 2005 with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the Republic of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).

On March 3-5 at Austin Peay State University, Southern Sudanese Foreign Minister Nhial Deng Nhial and key leaders will meet to lay the groundwork for democratic processes in the newly autonomous state. The conference has been organized through APSU’s Institute for Global Security Studies.

The conference also will serve as a platform for Nhial Deng Nhial and APSU President Sherry Hoppe to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) whereby APSU is designated as the locus of a mutually cooperative, comprehensive program to educate Southern Sudan’s future leaders.

The media is invited to a press conference at 1 p.m., Friday, March 3 in Room 305 of the Joe Morgan University Center. Before Hoppe and Nhial Deng Nhial sign the MOU, each will make comments. They will take media questions after the signing.

APSU is hosting a Diplomatic Reception between 7-9 p.m., Friday, March 3 in the Joe Morgan University Center Ballroom. Official presentations to Nhial Deng Nhial will begin at 7:45 p.m. The media is invited to the reception.

If you have any questions about the conference, telephone Greg Kaufmann, director of the Institute for Global Security Studies, at (931) 221-7910, or Carol Clark, executive assistant to the president, at (931) 221-7570.

For more information about the press conference and media access to Nhial Deng Nhial and/or other dignitaries, telephone Dennie B. Burke or Melony Leazer in APSU’s Public Relations and Marketing Office at (931) 221-7459. – Dennie B. Burke
