A Message from the Director...

Dr. Thomas O'ConnorWelcome to the Institute for Global Security Studies established in August 2005 here at Austin Peay State University.  This is an exciting time as we move forward to establish the IGSS as a regional source of expertise and a focal point in providing knowledge and services relating to global security studies and homeland security/defense.  But beyond that, our vision foresees the time when the IGSS will contribute to our national conversations on how best to secure our interests and security in a time of heightened threats.

A specific strength of the IGSS is its deliberate focus on a multidisciplinary approach to current security issues.  APSU has multiple competencies and wide-ranging faculty expertise which will underpin the IGSS’ ambitious charter.  We will not only work to promote current offerings, but we will also strive to build new courses and educational programs which will provide our students the necessary knowledge and coherent understanding with which to engage emerging global challenges across multiple sectors of concern.  Additionally, given APSU’s close relationship with our local and regional communities, the IGSS will seek to contribute to the education and training of those professionals charged with the protection and security of our communities, as well as community members themselves.

The future is marked with many challenges.  But as the successes of our first year of operation clearly indicate, the IGSS can...and will...meet these many challenges through the continued combined efforts and willing cooperation of the many students, faculty, and staff of APSU.  We look forward to your joining us on this exciting journey!
