My ancestry is almost all German with most branches dating to the 1850s in Perry County, MO, where I was born. I attended rural elementary schools and later Perryville High School. An academic scholarship helped me attendSoutheast Missouri State University where I obtained my B.S. in Mathematics. Then I taught high school mathematics for awhile.
Next I attended the University of Tennessee under the auspices of the National Science Foundation (1967) and later (1969) with a Graduate Teaching Assistantship. In 1971 I received my Master's degree in Mathematics and in 1973 my doctorate in Mathematics Education. Then I taught mathematics again and eventually made my way (1979) to Austin Peay State University.
In 1970 I married Carol "Kay" Lawson--a Home Economics graduate from Tennessee Technological University. This union produced two fine sons: Jacob & Johann. They are named for a plethora of ancestors. Both are computer science whizzes.
Along the way I have been fortunate enough to publish quite a bit in both mathematics and genealogy. As a result I have two theorems that bear my name, an Erdös number of two, APSU's Hawkins Award for scholarship/creativity, and the first of the Distinguished Alumni Awards given by my former high school.
At APSU I have taught almost all the freshman-sophomore mathematics courses at one time or another. Additionally I have taught several mathematics education courses, number theory, and some graduate courses that no longer exist. My advanced courses now are primarily those involving geometry.
