You have just discovered one of the secrets of Austin Peay State University: the Asian Studies Minor! Incorporating courses from departments throughout campus, the Asian Studies minor allows students to take a multidisciplinary approach to their education. Geographically speaking, this program is all inclusive; whether the subject is East Asia, the Middle East, South Asia, or Southeast Asia, Courses that incorporate Asian topics into their curriculum have been included in the list of approved courses.

Summer 2009 Japan Study Abroad Program: A Success!!!

--Download Brochure here--

Japan’s Ancient Imperial Capitals: Nara and Kyoto

May 18—June 28, 2009

Summer 2009 courses included in the program:

History 4910 (6 hrs), ENGL 340P (3 hrs), ENGL 5700

Following a 3 week intensive online reading and discussion course, Dr. Nelson led 8 students across Japan, to see historical sites related to Japan's ancient capitals, as well as experience Japan's current culture. The group left Nashville on June 3, returning on June 25, 2009. Cities visited: Tokyo, Ise, Kyoto, Kameoka, Osaka, Himeji, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Nagasaki. Students had the opportunity to homestay overnight with Japanese families, and time to interact with Japanese college students from three separate universities. All in all, the trip was a success! Everyone enjoyed the places we visited, ranging from Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples to karaoke boxes and giant robot statues. Stay tuned for a link to photos from the trip.

Plans are in the works to conduct another Japan study abroad tour in summer 2011. If interested, please stop by to see Dr. David Nelson or Dr. David Major (contact information below) in order to find out how you can apply, estimated cost of the program, etc.
