Norton
AntiVirus for Macintosh Computers
Background:
Computer viruses have become a
significant problem on the Austin Peay campus and in
fact anywhere that computers share files with each
other, especially via the internet.
The Solution:
In the Fall of 1999 the Technology
board asked the Office of Information Technology to present a plan for
virus protection. IT staff evaluated numerous
products and recommended the purchase of Norton
AntiVirus. In early January 2000 the negotiations
and purchase were completed. The Technology board
funded copies of the software for all the laboratory
computers on campus. The Office of Information
Technology funded copies
of the software for all existing desktop computers
on campus. Included in the purchase was a second
year of support and updates for all the covered
machines. Machines purchased from Dell in the future
will have Norton AntiVirus pre-installed. Future
purchasers of new Macintosh computers will have to
purchase their own copies of Norton AntiVirus.
Home Machines:
Unfortunately, our agreement with
Symantec (parent company of Norton) does not allow
us to supply copies of Norton AntiVirus for personal
machines owned by students, faculty members or staff
members. The identical product, Norton AntiVirus
2000 can be purchased at an academic discount in the
APSU bookstore. It is also available in almost every
computer software store.
