Photomicrograph of a texturally sector-zoned biotite porphyroblast from biotite zone Cambrian schist in the Pequop Mountains, Nevada. Zoning is a product of uninhibitedsyntectonic growth in all directions. Growth along porphyroblast margins that parallel foliation involved incorporation of inclusions, whereas growth along margins perpendicular to foliation involved syntaxial precipitation of biotite in dilating strain shadows, which generally precluded development of inclusions. Black lines in annotated photo show traces of inclusion trails inside the porphyroblast and trace of foliation in the matrix. Photo is from Camilleri (2009).
