Research Areas

  • Mesozoic and Cenozoic tectonics and paleogeography of the Knoll Mountain, Pequop Mountains, Wood Hills and Ruby-East Humboldt region in northeastern Nevada

  • Timing and geometry of Tertiary normal faulting and basin evolution in the Knoll Mountain (HD Range) region in northeastern Nevada

  • Quaternary normal faulting and geomorphic evolution of the Grant Range in east-central Nevada

  • Orogen to microscale mechanisms of extensional collapse in fold and thrust belts

  • Growth and deformation mechanisms of matrix and porphyroblastic biotite during regional metamorphism

Photomicrograph of a texturally sector-zoned biotite porphyroblast from biotite zone Cambrian schist in the Pequop Mountains, Nevada. Zoning is a product of  uninhibitedsyntectonic growth in all directions. Growth along porphyroblast margins that parallel foliation involved incorporation of inclusions, whereas growth along margins perpendicular to foliation involved syntaxial precipitation of biotite in dilating strain shadows,  which generally precluded development of inclusions.  Black lines in annotated photo show traces of inclusion trails inside the porphyroblast and trace of foliation in the matrix.  Photo is from Camilleri (2009).
