Services Offered By FSL and Financial Information
FSL offers a variety of services to promote academic and social success at the university. Each participant will be required to be involved in the following services.
FSL offers a course one hour per week during both the fall and spring semesters. This course is worth one credit hour, and participants will receive a letter grade each semester. Attendance is mandatory, and it should be noted that the cost of this course is not included in the program cost. Each freshman cohort will begin by learning about academic responsibility and personal organization preferences. Over time, the curriculum will be developed by the instructor based on the specific needs of each cohort. As participants move through their college career and the program, focus will gradually shift from transition into college to transition out of college and into the workforce.
Participants will meet with FSL staff on a regular basis to ensure that they are on track and meeting the expectations of courses and the program. This will also be an opportunity for participants to express any concerns they might have or accomplishments they want to share. The frequency of meetings will depend on the needs of each participant, but it is anticipated that it will be once per week during the freshman year, and then meetings will begin fading out as they become more acclimated to college life.
Participants of FSL are paired with an upperclassman or graduate student during their freshman and sophomore years. These individuals are available to assist in acclimation to the university and encouraging active participation in college life, but they also work with each participant to identify stressors, set personal goals, establish tools to reduce stress and meet goals, and measure their own success.
Faculty or staff mentors are assigned once participants reach their junior and senior years at APSU. These mentors are directly connected to each participant's major degree, and they assist the FSL team in the areas of advisement, career readiness, and transition to the workforce.
One-on-one tutoring is offered through the Academic Support Center (ASC) at APSU. Tutoring often takes place in a group setting, but we feel that, by having individualized sessions, tutors can assist in areas that may be outside of course content (such as organization and study habits). FSL also has the ability to find tutors in academic courses that are not typically offered through the ASC.
Mandatory Study Hours
All participants will be required to take part in three hours of supervised study hours each week. FSL is implementing these hours as part of our focus on academic success.
Although the cost of the FSL program is $2500 per semester, most students participant with no money out of pocket. It is our desire to offer support to as many individuals as we can, not to provide financial stressors. Please contact Dr. Grogan at email@example.com or 931-221-7546 to discuss financial assistance.
