Assessment Descriptions

CIRP - Cooperative Institutional Research             Program Freshman Survey

The survey is designed to provide community colleges, four-year colleges, and universities with a cost effective method of collecting  comparative data on their entering students for use in institutional decision-making, research, and assessment activities.  The survey covers a broad array of issues:  demographic characteristics, expectations of college, high school experiences, degree goals and career plans, college finances, attitudes, values, and life goals, reasons for attending college.  This survey gives APSU an in-depth profile of our freshmen students.  This survey is administered during Fall Freshmen Orientation.

NSSE- The National Survey of Student Engagement

NSSE is a survey of first year and senior college students around the United States.  Developed and coordinated by George Kuh, Ph.D. at Indiana University, this survey is designed to assess the undergraduate experience and provide information to institutions for understanding and improving that experience for students.  Austin Peay has participated in NSSE in the following years:  2003-04, 2005-06, 2006-07.

YFCY- Your First College Year Freshman Survey
This survey was designed as a follow-up instrument to the CIRP survey.  As such, YFCY data are most valuable when linked to relevant pre-test data from the CIRP.  Having baseline data collected at the time of college entry allows APSU to assess how and why our first-year students change over time, and to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of our first-year programs.  This survey is administered during the Spring semester.
