Consistent with the
institutional vision and mission
and with our heritage as an
institution with a major commitment
to quality teacher preparation, the
vision of the teacher education unit
at Austin Peay State University is
to prepare highly qualified
professionals who are knowledgeable
and skilled in standards-based
practice. Our goal is to prepare
competent, reflective, and caring
educators who, while working in
collaboration with other
professionals, will serve as change
agents to foster development and
learning in the lives of all
learners. Our theme, “Preparing
Professionals Through
Standards-Based Practices” reflects
our vision, mission, and goals, and
supports reflective, data-informed
planning for continuous improvement.

Project MORE Mission Statement
APSU’s Project MORE focuses on (a)
recruiting committed African
American candidates to the teaching
profession; (b) providing them with
a coordinated support system; (c)
immersing them in a rigorous,
well-rounded teacher education
program, emphasizing sensitivity to
diversity, technological competency,
and best teaching practices; and (d)
ultimately placing these
well-prepared practitioners in our
school system. Depending on their
concentration, students will follow
a prescribed program of studies in
accordance with standards
established by the National Council
for Accreditation of Teacher
Education (NCATE, 2002) and the APSU
School of Education.

Description
Each
year the Tennessee Higher Education
Commission administers the Minority
Teacher Education Program (MTE),
which provides funds, awarded on a
competitive basis, to Tennessee
colleges and universities for the
development of programs which
increase the number of African
American K-12 teachers in Tennessee.
A panel comprised of THEC staff,
representatives from the state’s
Department of Education, Board of
Education, local education agencies,
and colleges and universities will
evaluate proposals. Proposals
are evaluated and rank ordered.
Funding for those proposals with the
highest ranking will be awarded the
MTE grant for a period of two years.
