Diversity

“Foundations Institutions ensure that all first-year students experience diverse ideas, worldviews, and cultures as a means of enhancing their learning and preparing them to become members of pluralistic communities. Whatever their demographic composition, institutions structure experiences in which students interact in an open and civil community with people from backgrounds and cultures different from their own, reflect on ideas and values different from those they currently hold, and explore their own cultures and the cultures of others.”

Executive Summary

The Austin Peay State University Diversity Dimension Committee has produced the following executive summary as part of the university self-study process for the Foundations of Excellence project.

Austin Peay State University’s commitment to diversity awareness was evaluated by the Diversity Dimensions committee. The primary focus of the committee was to highlight current diversity ideas, interactions in and out of the classroom and behavioral standards expected of students attending our campus. To gain a deeper understanding of what the campus community considered to be diversity, the committee reviewed surveys submitted by students, staff and faculty members. The survey responses confirmed that defining what diversity means for our campus and intentionally nurturing a robust learning environment through curricular opportunities is needed. The first-year student experience course (APSU 1000) is the only structured opportunity for students to discuss diversity. The committee suggestions that are highlighted in the report include updating the college’s mission and vision statement to reflect our diversity efforts. Additionally, the committee suggests a consistent syllabus format for all highly enrolled freshmen courses. The suggestions provided by the committee will help increase the awareness of the various dimensions of diversity and student behavioral expectations at Austin Peay State University.
