Welcome to Austin Peay State University and the
College of Science & Mathematics
In July 2011, Tennessee Board of Regents, Office of Academic Affairs defined an adjunct as follows:
Adjunct faculty – A temporary employee who teaches less than a full time load as defined by the department and institution of employment on a semester-by-semester basis. Currently, adjunct faculty are not eligible to participate in the institution’s health or retirement plans. The primary responsibility of this position is to teach a course or courses as assigned and assume other assigned responsibilities as delineated by the department and institution related to the effective teaching of the assigned course(s) and support of student learning.
While all the above is true, we add to that definition that the adjunct is an indispensable member of the CoSM team! WELCOME to the College of Science & Mathematics and to the adventure of teaching at Austin Peay. It is our hope that this handbook will provide you with some basic information to assist as you become a part of your department, the college and the university as a whole. The material in this has come directly from the faculty handbook, APSU policy and procedures, and the APSU website.
I came to Austin Peay State University as a lab manager, became a faculty member, a chair and am now the dean of the best College on campus. The faculty in our college are exceptional and it is a privilege to work with these professional men and women. We are pleased to add you to our ranks. I hope that you enjoy the experience of working with the students who are looking to you to provide them an exceptional college experience.
Let me encourage you to talk with your department chair and seek advice when those “unusual” situations arise. Make use of the APSU website looking up more about the policies and procedures in this handbook and to keep abreast of events and accomplishments at APSU.
We appreciate your being a part of our team and hope that this experience is rewarding.
Jaime Taylor, Ph.D.
