What does it mean to major in history?

You will take specific foundational courses in U.S. and World History and then take six focused, upper-level courses in history that must treat both U.S. and non-U.S. topics.  You will then take a capstone course that takes an in-depth look at a very specific topic to see how different historians have treated that topic.  You will also have a minor in a discipline of your choice.  This really gives you two areas of expertise.

Why is Austin Peay State University a good place to major in history?

We have a very fine faculty with areas of expertise covering the full breadth of history and areas around the world.  Our permanent faculty hold the Ph.D. from some of the most prestigious universities in the world, including Cambridge and Vanderbilt .  Our classes are small, and our faculty members know our students by name.  Moreover, our job does not end with your graduation.  We consider it part of our responsibility to help you get into graduate school or get a job after graduation from APSU.  Thus, it is not unusual for APSU faculty and students to develop lifelong bonds.

What can APSU history majors do after graduation?

Historians go on to prosper in life as historians, middle-school and high-school teachers,  archivists, park rangers, civil servants, military officers, diplomats, lawyers, businessmen, politicians, and journalists.  A recent survey showed that history was the most common undergraduate degree for the CEO’s of Fortune 500 Companies.
