Minutes of September 16, 2005 Meeting

   1.   Introduction of Ted Heidloff - Mitch Robinson

         Mitch Robinson introduced Ted Heidloff, Director of Human Resources and Affirmative Action.  

         Dr. Heidloff made brief comments regarding potential faculty recruitment initiatives.

 

         E-doption Training Session - Mitch Robinson

         Mitch Robinson announced that an E-doption training session will be held Sept. 27, 9 – 10 a.m. in

         UC 305.  Oct.14 deadline for E-doption – paper adoptions will no longer be accepted, book

         adoptions must be submitted electronically.  E-mail was sent to faculty today.  If the department

         secretary places the orders, please have the secretary attend.  Actual adoptions may be placed at the

         training session.

 

   2.   IETS and Contracts - Richard Jackson

         Richard Jackson has Geier funds available through Oct. 31 to recruit African-American faculty.  If

         chairs have an opportunity to interface with potential faculty recruits, please see Richard Jackson for assistance.

  

         Please review the email sent to faculty today regarding Campus Legal Advisory information #001.

 

         Richard Jackson is now responsible for the APSU Strategic Planning (IETS).  The Strategic Planning cycle for 2004-05 is complete; the IETS must be closed out for the 2004-05 by Sept. 30.  A reminder and access information will be emailed for 2005-06.  If the 2004-05 data has been submitted, Richard Jackson will send the access information.

 

         Richard Jackson is now responsible for reviewing contracts.  If a contract is a renewal, attach last year’s contract.  If it is grant related or policy, attach the grant and policy (or pertinent parts) to the contract for review.  Ed Davis will continue to sign contracts related to grants.

 

   3.   AP Day - Scott McDonald

         AP Day is Saturday, Oct. 8.  Only three departments need to respond – great response this year.  The departments are critical to this event.  Scott will email additional information to deans/directors/chairs soon.

 

         Tuesday, Oct. 4 is Clarksville/Montgomery County College Night for all juniors and seniors – Deans/Directors/Chairs were asked to participate by having faculty represent each college.  Scott will email more information

 

   4.   Proposed Admission Standards - Scott McDonald and Harriett McQueen

         Distributed and reviewed proposal for admission requirements for entering freshmen.  Proposed implementation date is Fall 2007.  Scott McDonald and Harriett McQueen will present this proposal to various campus groups and provide an open forum in Kimbrough 119 on Sept. 21, at 3:00 pm.  Scott requested input and questions from the group.

  

   5.   APSU 1000 - Melissa Gomez

         Enrollment will have 10-12 new APSU 1000 sections in spring.  Melissa announced alumni roundtable discussions to be held on Feb. 8 in ballroom with alumni (Sheila Boone) so sophomores can network with alumni.  Melissa requested input from the group on alumni who can share experiences that day.  Her area will contact alumni.

        

   6.   Early Alert - Harriett McQueen

         Early Alert is up and running.  Dr. McQueen distributed instructions for submitting referrals and procedures.  Graduate Assistant Cynthia Workman will follow-up on early alert students.  Faculty will do early-alert referrals online through Web for Faculty.  Email workmanc@apsu.edu with questions.  Encourage faculty to use Early Alert as soon as they recognize student needs help.

 

   7.   Adjunct Teaching Load Restrictions - Susan Calovini (Attachment A)

         Currently, the only place detailing adjunct workload restrictions is at the bottom of current adjunct contract.  Dr. Calovini proposed addition of Adjunct Workload to Policy 5:015 and revision of statement on current adjunct contract.  Dr. Speck to take to VP’s meeting.

 

   8.   Policy 5:015 - Bruce Speck                  

            (Re: Addressing intern and coop credit or for treating P/F courses differently from regularly graded courses.)

            Tabled.

 

   9.   Schedule for New Faculty Orientation Session - Diane McDonald (Attachment B)

         All are invited to the socials to meet new faculty.

 

   10. Update on Academic Proposals - Diane McDonald (Attachment C)

   11. New Faculty Mentors - Bruce Speck (Attachment D)

         All faculty members but one has been assigned a mentor.  Correct Dixie Dennis’ mentor to Dave Kanervo.

 

   12. “High School Teacher Who Made A Difference” - Bruce Speck (Attachment E)

            Procedures for nominations will be distributed on October 1.

 

   13. “Posters at the Capitol” (Attachment F)

         Invitation to present undergrad research posters in the state Capitol Feb. 1.  John Foote has additional funding available for undergraduate research in sciences through Presidential Research grants.

 

Other

Dr. Patty Mulkeen, Interim Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness, distributed information to chairs regarding their department and major (senior exam scores by major including student credit hours; on-line faculty evaluations, field tests); assessment information available by phone.  Will assist with teaching load credit data loads. 

 

David Denton is now Interim Dean of the College of Professional Programs and Social Sciences. Welcome to Bill Rayburn, Interim Director of the School of Business.

 

Disability Services Office will have site review on September 26 & 27.  No punitive associations with visit.  Requested group to email Dr. Diane Berty with interest in participating with team.  Barbara Phillips will be retiring at the end of this semester. 

 

A retirement party will be held for Marianne Yarborough today in Harned 130.

 

Margaret Hatch recovering and, hopefully, returning in two weeks.

 

New Sloan online courses are available for Katrina victims with tuition assistance.

 

Dan Bath and RH McCoy plan to retire from the Department of Biology at the end of this semester.

 

It is important to turn in grades in on time and at the end of the semester.  It was suggested that the deadline be published. 

 

Memorial service for Dr. Vernon Warren will be held in two weeks.

 

Music Phi Mu Alpha presentation tonight.
