Minutes of September
7, 2005 Meeting

Present: Bruce Speck, Diane McDonald, Gerald Beavers,
Deborah Fetch, Stan Groppel, Charles Pinder, Susan Calovini, Harriett McQueen,
Sean Hogan, Tom Buttery, Gaines Hunt, Jim Diehr, Diane Berty, Telaina Wrigley.
1. Funding Raising – Roy Gregory
Mr. Gregory requested help from the Deans
Council members to solicit assistance from their divisions to donate and
provide names of potential donors. Mr.
Gregory distributed two pieces of information; 1) Division of Colleges &
Schools for University Advancement; and 2) A Donor Bill of Rights. Deans Council members were asked to think
about the top three things that they would like to see happen within their
college.
2. Adjunct Teaching Loads (Main Campus &
F.C.) – Susan Calovini
There has
been some confusion about combination of adjunct teaching loads with main
campus and
(21 hours)
per year. A written statement is
needed. Susan Calovini distributed the
adjunct pay form
which includes the current statement regarding the maximum
hours to be taught. Susan Calovini and
Diane
McDonald will draft a statement to clarify the limitations of adjunct teaching
hours and bring the
statement to the next deans council meeting.
It was
noted that the adjunct instructors should be assigned rank according to policy
and paid
accordingly.
3. APSU Policy 5:028 - Diane McDonald
It was
reported that the wording “release time” was changed to “reassigned time” as
suggested at the
8/31/05
meeting. The questions regarding the 400
clock hours has been referred to TCA code and
will report
will be given at the next Deans Council meeting.
4. Change of Grade to a “W” Bulletin Statement -
Diane Berty & Jim Diehr
There are
on-going conversations regarding the change of grade to a “W” bulletin
statement.

McDonald. This team will report to Deans
Council in two weeks.
5. Bulletin Editing Process/Curriculum Process -
Charles Pinder
To be
discussed at the next deans council meeting.
6. Mentors for New Faculty - Bruce Speck (Attachment A)
Dr. Speck
asked the deans to have these forms submitted by next Wednesday, Sept. 14.

A motion was made to accept the minutes as
written, the motion was seconded, and approved.

Policy statement
is needed to address grades of “I” when faculty members leave APSU. Statement should be placed in the
Bulletin. Gaines Hunt will research this
issue and report back to Deans Council.

It was suggested
that adjunct training is needed. The
training could be provided on-line.

There was
discussion of grades not being turned in by the due date. It was suggested that an
email from the Provost be sent out near the time the grades
are due. Dr. Speck requested from
Telaina a list
of reasons that cause grades not being submitted in a timely manner.

Deployment is in progress for 12-18
months. 300+ applications have been
submitted for Fall II.

Fetch
New computer system is a success. Print management system will be reviewed in
October.
Deborah will provide information to
Diane Berty to take to the SGA Executive Committee. This
system would be beneficial to all
university labs.
Stan
Groppel
- On-line enrollment headcount is up 87%. These
numbers are main campus only and do not
include RODP.
- The SLOAN Foundation is involved in trying to
serve hurricane evacuees. APSU is listed
as a
participating university. Currently, three hurricane evacuees have been
enrolled.
- Backpack software allows a student to download
an entire Blackboard course. The course
information
can be uploaded to the professor. This
will be convenient for military in
other
limited internet service.

Pinder
Graduate
enrollment increased by 15%.
Harriett
McQueen
- Tutoring
requests are up significantly from last year.
The Early Alert System is available for
faculty members to refer students to
the tutoring center for follow-up. 77
sections of APSU 1000.

Requested that
advisement training be conducted for all faculty. It was recommended that Dr.
McQueen
schedule with the deans various times for advisement training.

Deborah Fetch
suggested that the advisement system be reviewed to determine the best system
for APSU.

First Faculty Senate meeting will be
Sept. 22 in

- Will hold a meeting on Friday to
include anyone that deals with international students.
- Will soon
provide a report of adjunct ratios for service departments.

African American
Cultural Center Family’s Program is up and running. Funded by Geier. Mentoring program that includes 10
undergraduate students with 3.0 gpa will work with
faculty members. New students will be
put into “family groups” in an effort to increase retention and progress to
graduation.

- The 14th day is Sunday

- The 2005-06 Faculty Handbook
will be posted on the web today or tomorrow.
- New Faculty Orientation sessions will be sent
out soon.
- The review date for three proposals ended
Sept. 1 and will now move to committee.
- Two five-year academic programs are up for
review this year are Professional Studies and
Health and Human Performance. The audits will be conducted through a new
TBR format.

The 2006-07
faculty positions have been posted on the APSU web site. The advertisement will
appear in
the Diverse (formerly Black Issues in Higher Education) publication on Sept.
22. The
advertisement will be placed in the Hispanic Outlook on-line only and
The Chronicle of Higher
Education
on-line only as soon as one more issue is resolved.
Deans Council will not meet next
Wednesday, Sept. 14, the next meeting will be Friday,
Sept. 16.
