Minutes of Oct. 5, 2005 Meeting

Fort Campbell Center

 

Present:  Diane McDonald, Susan Calovini, Jim Diehr, Gaines Hunt, David Denton, Deborah Fetch, Charles Pinder, Stan Groppel, Barbara Phillips (for Diane Berty), Scott McDonald (for Harriett McQueen), Loretta Griffy (for Sean Hogan). 

 

 

1.   Allocation of Graduate Assistantships - Charles Pinder

      Dr. Pinder distributed and reviewed the committee’s charge, the list of the committee members, the current allocation of graduate assistants, and the Criteria for the Allocation of Graduate Assistantships in Academic Units. It is TBR’s goal to increase base-funded graduate assistantships to equal 20% of graduate enrollment. 

 

      It was asked if TBR has provided funding for this mandate.  It was also noted that TBR has not provided graduate assistantships for the RODP Master’s degree in Nursing.  Susan Calovini requested that consideration be given to reassigned time for graduate coordinators (to include recruitment). 

 

      The members of Deans Council were asked to email Dr. Pinder their ideas on weighting the four criteria (distributed by Dr. Pinder) by 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 6.

 

2.   Book Review - Jim Diehr

Dr. Diehr reviewed Chapter 1, ‘A Generational Approach to Understanding Students’ of the “Serving the Millennial Student” book.    

 

3.   Deans Council Dinner at Dr. Speck’s Oct. 28 - Bruce Speck

      6 p.m.

 

4.   Minutes of Sept. 28 Deans Council Meeting (Attachment A)

      A motion was made to approve the minutes as presented, the motion was seconded and approved.

 

Other

     

Barbara Phillips (for Diane Berty)

      Reported that the new University Recreation Center has been turned over to the contractor and is scheduled to be complete in 365 days.

      Encouraged deans to participate in the upcoming homecoming events.

 

Diane McDonald

      Distributed a report of “Remaining Timeline for Reorganization Proposals”.  Noted that an open forum will be held on Oct. 11, 3 p.m., MUC 305.

 

Susan Calovini

      Distributed the proposed adjunct workload section for APSU 5:015 - Instructional Workload Policy.  A motion was made to approve the proposal; the motion was seconded; an amendment was accepted to use the term “part-time adjunct instructors” consistently throughout the policy; the motion was approved by all.
                                                                                                                             

      The adjunct workload criteria should be added to the Teaching Load Credit Policy 5:015.  The

      Adjunct workload statement will be submitted to Human Resources to be added to the adjunct contract.

 

Charles Pinder

      There will future discussions of APSU becoming IRB certified.

 

Stan Groppel

      Distributed the revised definition of Hybrid Course and Web Enhanced Course.  A motion was made to approve the hybrid and enhanced course definitions, the motion was seconded, with insertion of “is” in the last paragraph, the motion was approved.  Deans should provide these definitions to their chairs and directors. Dr. Groppel will discuss with the Registrar how these courses will be identified in the Schedule of Classes.

 

Scott McDonald (for Harriett McQueen)

   -  The proposed admission standards will be submitted to Faculty Senate at their next meeting.

   -  AP Day will be held Saturday, Oct. 8.

 

Diane McDonald

   -  New Faculty Orientation will be held Friday; deans were asked to send Diane questions to add to a questionnaire for new faculty.

   -  Oct. 13 – Faculty Research Forum

   -  Oct. 13 – TBR Academic Audit Meeting

   -  Revised template was sent out to department chairs – Dr. Speck will schedule a meeting with each dean to review the first phase of the department templates.

   -  Discussion regarding faculty handbook developed – 1) Which handbook should a faculty member be governed by, the one they are hired under or as revised?  2) How are changes in departmental criteria approved?
