Deans, Directors and Chairs Meeting

1.   Advising Workshop and 2. Anticipated Needs for APSU 1000 – Harriett McQueen

Dr. Harriett McQueen provided a PowerPoint presentation and distributed hard copies of the PowerPoint.  Academic Advising Committee looking at current advising process and comparing with the National Standards for Advising and determining what changes we need to make and structure are outlined on the handout, including dates of  “New Student Welcome” and “Freshman Orientation”.  Deans, Directors and Chairs were asked to recommend the best suited faculty. 

 

3.      Limits on Summer Extra Compensation – Houston Davis

FYI - Policy not to exceed 25% of annual salary in the summer includes Spring II and Fall I at Fort Campbell

 

4.      Out-of-Country Travel Requests – Houston Davis

      These requests must be submitted in ample time to have TBR approval prior to departure.  Out of country travel includes Hawaii and Alaska.  Two weeks prior is for travel in continental U.S. and Canada.

 

5.      Library Book Purchases -  Deborah Fetch

      Funds must be spent by 4:30 p.m. Feb. 15 or the money will be lost.

      Feb. 23 – Chairs give requests to deans prior to Feb. 23 – Bring to Deans Council Feb. 23.

 

6.      Criteria for Departmental Personnel Actions – Bruce Speck

Opportunity to take departmental criteria and put it into this format; the criteria should be specific in order to provide clear outline and uniform for all faculty.  Houston will email the criteria form to all deans, directors, and chairs.

 

7.   Presentation of Electronic Portfolio – Mike Gotcher

      Mike Gotcher provided presentation of an potential electronic faculty portfolio through Blackboard.  May scan documents and save as PDF, Word, or web page.  The committee can view the dossier through Internet.  A committee meeting could be held with computers and all view the dossier at the same time.  A tracking system can be placed on the dossier and view when viewed and by whom.

      The department would have develop their own template; the committees would have to be entered as students; the faculty member would be entered as the instructor.  The Office of Extended and Distance Education would have to enter the committee and faculty member.  There are faculty labs that assistance is available for scanning documents, etc.  Information Technology has the responsibility to make sure all data is protected from computer hacker.

9.      “President’s Choice for Education Secretary Wins Unanimous Approval from Senate Panel – FYI – It seems that national and local politicians are interested in getting students through the higher education pipeline.   Dr. Speck encouraged all to think about how to address these issues and maintain what is best about what we do.  There was additional discussion regarding national and local trends in higher education (electronic delivery).

 

APSU is currently trying to become one of the current 29 universities in EArmyU.  It will be beneficial to APSU to have more courses Online to get into EArmy U.   

 

      Deans have been asked to discuss with chairs potential future programs and where we are leading APSU.   

 

      Buttery reported that we are requesting our own Masters of Professional Studies with various concentrations. 

 

            Gerald Beavers announced approval of $1 million grant for homeland security.

 

Other

 

University Excused Absences – A draft of a policy was distributed and presented by Tom Buttery.  Chairs and directors were asked to provide feedback to the deans by Feb. 16.

 

Houston Davis and Bruce Speck will take spoken concerns of retention of upperclassmen and validation issues with the enrollment directors.

 

 

Next Deans Council meeting: Stan Groppel will provide report of quality of Online classes – Ask Dr. Speck.
