The on-campus recruitment program
(OCR) allows businesses and institutions to meet
with Austin Peay students and alumni in a
centralized location. It is a convenient way
to begin exploring your options for life after
college.
Right now, you may feel pressure about your
future, especially the steps you should take to
secure that important initial career opportunity
and land that first job. The following pointers
should help you in your efforts.
Basic
Information
What exactly is on-campus
recruiting?
On-campus recruiting is when a
business or school comes to Austin Peay to meet
students and alumni with the intention of
attracting future employees. To this end,
recruiters may set up a table or presentation to
give information about their company and what it has to offer new
graduates. They may also conduct
on-campus interviews to hire for specific
positions. Generally, the
focus is on entry level opportunities for
individuals with a college education.
Who is eligible to take advantage of OCR
opporunities?
All APSU seniors, graduate students and alumni
who are actively seeking a job may take advantage
of on-campus recruiting opportunities. Some
companies are looking for individuals in a certain
field of study.
Must I complete any
paperwork before I take part in OCR?
Only if you want to participate
in job interviews. Interviews require that
you sign up for a time with our office and submit a
credentials
file if you do not already have one.
Interview times are limited, so we recommend that
you sign up as early as possible. The
deadline is 48 hours prior to the interview date.
Where is OCR held and how long does
it take?
You will find information tables in
the lobby of the University Center.
Presentations are usually held in a meeting room in
the UC. Don't be shy: you can spend as much
or as little time as you wish talking to
recruiters. Unless otherwise indicated,
interviews are conducted in the Morgan University
Center, Room 112. Usually, they are scheduled in 30
minute time slots.
Why should I participate if I do not know or
care about working for any of the organizations
listed on the recruiting calendar?
Unless you are already involved in intensive job
search, you probably are not aware of the
particular characteristics of recruiting companies,
their products or services and the kinds of
positions open for professional-level employees. We
suggest that you visit the company's homepage
linked in the on-campus
recruiting schedule. You may be surprised to
find out that the company in question has career
opportunities that interest you. And,
remember, you can always contact Career Services to
suggest a company that you would like to see
recruit on-campus at Austin Peay.
Additional
Answers about Interviewing during OCR
Should I interview just for practice
only?
NO. Employers are spending their time and money to
travel to campus to talk with potential employees.
Don't waste their time if you are sure that you
would never work for their organization.
Participate in the interview only if you genuinely
want to find out more about a company and what they
have to offer new graduates.
What should I wear?
Men should wear a conservative business suit or a
neat sport jacket or sweater, tie and dress
pants. Women should wear a business suit,
dress or skirt and blouse. Hair should be neatly
cut and styled, makeup applied conservatively,
shoes shined, nails cleaned, etc. Remember,
you make an important first impression the minute
you meet an employer. For more information on
appropriate dress and grooming, visit MUC 112 to
consult our Career Resource Library.
What if I decide to cancel the interview
appointment of fail to show up?
Cancellations and no shows create gaps in a
recruiter's interview schedule that could have been
filled by someone else. This leaves a
negative impression of you personally, of the
Office of Career Services and of the university as
a whole. As such, cancellations should be
made as far in advance as possible, and last minute
cancellations should be made only in case of an
emergency. Because of the potentially serious
consequences for the OCR program, anyone who
cancels an interview appointment or is a "no
show" more than two times will be barred from
further use of APSU Career Services
What should I do the day of the
interview?
Be prompt; check in at least 10 minutes before the
interview. As mentioned earlier, dress
professionally. Know why you are
interviewing. Do your research beforehand so
you know why you want to work for this company.
Should I take any further action after the
interview?
The employer will usually present a timetable for
receiving further information from his/her
organization. It is appropriate to get the
employer's name and address in order to write a
brief thank-you letter for the interview. Job
Choices magazine, available free from Career
Services, has an excellent example that you can
use.
What should I do if I accept a job
offer?

deactivate your credentials file. You can
reactivate your file later if necessary.
