Student Information
As college seniors, you may feel pressure about your future, especially the steps you should take to secure that important initial career opportunity and land that first job. The following pointers should help you in your efforts.
Who is eligible to interview?
All APSU seniors, graduate students and alumni who are job searching may interview.
Where are interviews conducted and how long do they last?
All interviews are conducted in the Morgan University Center, Room 112 unless otherwise indicated on the interview schedule. Thirty minute time slots are allotted for each interview unless the employer indicated differently.
Must I complete any paperwork before I sign up for interviews?
Yes. In order to interview on-campus, you must have started a placement file. Your resume must be submitted to the office before the date of your interview (resume copies are given to employers to review on the day of the interview).
How can I sign up for on-campus interviews?
You must fill out all necessary information on the sign-up sheets located in the Office of Career Services in MUC 112. Only a limited number of interviews are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so sign as early as possible!!
Why should I interview if I do not know or care about working for any of the organizations listed on the recruiting calendar?
Unless you are already involved in intensive job search, you probably are not aware of the particular characteristics of the recruiting companies, their products or services and the kinds of positions open for professional-level employees. We suggest that you come by the office to research company literature in the Career Resource Library or on the company's world wide page (companies with www homepages will have a link to their homepage in the interview schedule). You may be presently surprised to find out that a certain company or companies have the career opportunity that you are seeking.
Should I interview just for practice only?
NO. Employers are spending their time and money to travel to the APSU campus in order to talk with potential employees. Don't waste their time and yours if you are not absolutely positively sure that you would never work for their organization. However, if you would like to find out the companies and what they have to offer new graduates, then participate in the on-campus initial interview.
What should I wear?
Men should wear a conservative business suit, a neat sport jacket and tie, or possibly a sweater and tie. Dress pants only. Women should wear a business suit, dress or skirt & blouse. Hair should be neatly cut and styles, shoes shines, nails cleaned, etc. (The Career Resource Library has numerous books about professional dress). A very important first impression is made on the employer the minute you walk in the door.
What if I decide to cancel the interview appointment of fail to show up?
"No Shows" create gaps in employers' interview slots, vacate an interview slot that could have filled by someone else and leave a negative impression of you personally, the Office of Career Services and the University as a whole. Also remember that you "don't get a second chance to make a first impression." You may want to interview with this company later and your first impression will weigh heavily against you. Such actions will not be tolerated!! Anyone who cancels an interview appointment or is a "no show" at least 2 times will have such information recorded in his/her placement file and will be barred from further use of APSU Career Services
What should I do the day of the interview?
Be prompt - check in at least 10 minutes before the interview. As mentioned earlier, dress professionally. Know why you are interviewing (Why do you want to work for this company).
Should I take any further action after the interview?
The employer will usually present a timetable for receiving further information from his/her organization. It is appropriate to get the employer's name and address in order to write a brief thank-you letter for the interview. (Job Choices magazine, available from Career Services, has an excellent example that you can use).
What should I do after I accept the job offer?
Notify Career Services immediately so that we can deactivate your placement file. Provide us with the following information:
-
Employer/Company Name
-
Title of your job
-
How you learned about the job (through the Career Services or on your own)
-
Your salary (kept confidential & used for statistical purposes only)
