The Credentials File

What is the Credentials File and how is it used?

The Credentials File is a free service provided to APSU juniors, seniors and alumni.  The file is created from an approved resume, references and two forms (available in our office or via the link at the bottom of this page).  Employers contact us from time to time looking for candidates in different fields.  When they do, we review files and forward good matches for their consideration.  Whenever we send your file to someone, you receive an e-mail notification. Of course, if you ever wonder if, when, and to whom your file has been sent, just ask.  We keep detailed records.

We also take requests from you!  If are interested in a company or school, we are happy to submit your file or any part of it for you.

Can I keep other things in my Credentials File besides the basics?

Sure.  Depending on what your goals are, you may include test scores, transcripts, cover letters, recommendations, etc.  We will work with you to tailor your file appropriately.  However, all materials should be neatly presented and kept current.  We will not forward out-of-date materials.

How long do you keep my Credentials File?

By default, Credentials Files remain active for one year.  An active file is one that is eligible for submission to employers.  If you want your file to remain active longer than one year, simply contact us in writing.  You may need to update your information to keep it current.

You can also ask us to inactivate your file at any time via mail or e-mail.  In fact, we really appreciate it if you let us know when you are no longer seeking a job.  The more current our files are, the better reputation we have with employers, and the more opportunities they give us to pass on to you!  Plus, we like to celebrate your victories; it's exciting to hear that you got the job!

Once your file is inactive, we store it.  You can reactivate by submitting updated information in writing.  If we do not hear from you within four years of the last active date, we will destroy your materials. If you later re-enter the job market, we are happy to help you start a new file.

What can I do to make my Credentials File a success?

As long as your file is active, we recommend that you update it regularly.  It's easy with e-mail.  Simply send us a message letting us know what changes you wish to make, and attach revised materials in Word or PDF.

Remember, whether you are a student or an alumnus, Career Services is here to help you.  Don't hesitate to contact us for help achieving your career goals.
