Greetings
from the Director of the School of Business
On behalf of the faculty and staff of
the School of Business, I welcome you and invite you
to become a partner in our great learning adventure.
Whether you are just beginning your collegiate studies
or are returning to complete them, your dreams for the
future are important to each of us.
The School of Business Mission Statement
speaks of performance, professionalism, pride, and
passion. Those words were chosen with great care. They
are intended to convey the core values of the School
of Business culture and to serve as guides for the
work we do, as both faculty and students.
Our School, because of our
professionalism and our ability to perform, often
exceeds the accomplishments of people with far more
privileged circumstances. Our senior students
routinely score well above the national average on
exit exams, and graduates of our accounting program
have the second highest first-time pass rate in the
region. Our faculty members have won both teaching and
research awards, and our School is proud of the
implementation of the first undergraduate course in
Geographic Information Systems in the United States.
Two international courses have been introduced in
recent years and are taught by faculty members with
extensive experience abroad. New "smart"
classrooms are operational and add an immediacy and
excitement to the classroom experience. We are working
diligently to identify and respond to student needs
through the regular use of information surveys and
web-based bulletin boards and discussion sites. We are
currently assessing the feasibility of a Master of
Business Administration program and reviewing
undergraduate programs of study. Professional student
organizations offer field trips, networking, and other
opportunities to contribute to the quality of the
college experience. Each of them invites your
participation.
As a student of Business Administration,
you will find yourself challenged not only to remember
facts and figures, but also to understand their
origins and their interpretations. The largely
theoretical perspectives of textbooks are tempered and
balanced by an experienced faculty who are capable of
explaining the "why" of course prerequisites
and requirements in light of the reality of today's
workplace.
We believe that the key to living
successfully in society is to contribute positively to
the world around us. A foundation in the Liberal Arts
is critical for business education and performance as
a business professional. When you enter the world of
business, your professionalism will determine the
degree to which your contributions will be perceived
as positive and progressive.
Each of these elements of our culture:
performance, professionalism, and pride, contributes
to our passionate belief in the value of life-long
learning. This passion is what inspires faculty to
invent new ways to share information and impart
knowledge to students. Our passion inspires our
research, challenging both students and faculty to
continue to explore, to question, and to learn. Our
passion replaces privilege with grit and
determination. In the end, passion fuels our
performance, our professionalism, and our pride in our
achievements.
The faculty and staff of the School of
Business are dedicated to assisting you in achieving
your dreams for your future. We view our greatest
accomplishment as having had a role in your successful
completion of your degree and in helping you develop
the foundation for your future professional
accomplishments. Once again, we welcome you and hope
you are as excited as we are about the promise
contained in our great learning adventure.
