Internships are an integral part of a business student's educational experience. In the Austin Peay College of Business, an internship gives students the opportunity to receive three credit hours towards their degrees while completing internships. This provides a student with an invaluable experience that cannot be found within the confines of the classroom.
Students who choose to complete internships are giving themselves a chance to experience the post-graduate life of a business professional in today’s world. Internships can be a great way for the student to find out if a particular facet of business is the right “fit” for his/her personality and can often lead to full-time employment.
Students are eager to put the skills that they have learned in the classroom to use. They will most likely have the chance to work with various types of software to which they have not been previously exposed. Students also have the opportunity to see what it is like to interact with others in a professional work environment. Even though many students work during college, an internship may be the first time working in a truly professional environment.
Many students with positive experiences may discover that they do not enjoy particular areas of business. This realization may allow students to contemplate working in other areas after graduation. Internships can also provide great benefits for students as well as companies that choose to employ them.
In order to obtain an internship, the student must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and must be given permission from their department chair. The internship must be related to the student’s major concentration and approved by the College of Business.
