Applying for Cancellation Benefits

Borrowers who undertake certain public, military or teaching service employment are eligible to have all or part of their loans canceled. The cancellation process consists of two steps: postponement and cancellation.

During the postponement period, your regular principal payments will be deferred while you are performing a service that will allow you to qualify for cancellation of all or a portion of the loan. The employer or agency for which you work must provide certification of employment or service and a detailed job description. To apply for postponement, complete and submit the postponement form.
