CHEM 4000  -- Senior Seminar Syllabus Spring 2005
 

Course Description:

Review of major areas of chemistry, visiting chemists’ presentations, research students’ presentations, career counseling, and interviewing for employment.

 Prerequisites

Junior or Senior standing.

 Course Objective:

 To provide students with a review of the various areas of chemistry

 To stimulate understanding of these areas and their inter-relationships

 To provide students with the tools necessary to obtain gainful employment/advancement

 The various areas of chemistry will be reviewed using the chemical literature.  Pairs of  students will also be expected to lead a class discussion of a recently published article from a peer-reviewed journal.  In addition, students will be introduced to resume writing and the resources offered by APSU career services. 

Grading:

In addition to homework and quizzes, there will be three in-class exams and a cumulative final.  The breakdown of your final grade is as follows:  

Assignments:   

Approved Seminar Critiques:              40 %
Resume and Career activities             20 %
Article Discussion Participation:         15 %
Active leading of Article discussion:    25 % 
 

A 90.0 – 100.0     B 80.0 – 89.0     C 70.0 – 79.0     D 65.0 – 69.0     F < 65.0%

 Academic Integrity and Conduct:

Students are expected to conduct themselves appropriately at all times.  Disruptive students who refuse to cooperate will be asked to leave the class session, with possible removal from the course.  Academic and classroom misconduct will not be tolerated. 

Academic dishonesty may be defined as any act of dishonesty in academic work.  This includes (but is not limited to) plagiarism, the changing or falsifying of any academic documents or materials, cheating, and giving or receiving of any unauthorized aid in tests, examinations or other assigned work.  If you are caught cheating, you will be given a failing grade for that assignment, and at the instructor’s discretion a referral to the student academic affairs office for disciplinary action.

Disruptive behavior in the classroom may be defined, but is not limited to, behavior that disrupts the learning environment (e.g. offensive language, harassment of students and professors, repeated outbursts from a student which disrupts the flow of instruction or prevents concentration on the subject being taught, failure to cooperate in maintaining classroom decorum, etc.), and the use of any electronic or other device which disturbs or interrupts the concentration of others (e.g., disturbing noises from beepers, cell phones, palm pilots, lap-top computers, games, etc.)

Attendance and Makeups:

Attendance in this class is required and role will be taken at each meeting. Absences are allowed only by approval of the instructor.  Excessive unexcused absences will decrease a student's final grade at the discretion of the instructor.
