Administrators and personnel from Austin Peay's TRIO programs are hosting an open house to commemorate National TRIO Day. The event will be held from 2-3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19 in the main lobby of the Morgan University Center.

Funded through grants from the U.S. Department of Education, TRIO is a nationwide program to help low-income, first-generation students and adults pursue college degrees.

APSU has five TRIO programs: Educational Opportunity Center, Student Support Services, High School Upward Bound, Veterans Upward Bound, Tri-County Upward Bound. The programs serve 1,929 people and bring $1,448,394 to APSU annually.

The Education Opportunity Center assists adults interested in going back to school and offers information on higher educational institutions, vocational school, technical school, certificate programs, admissions, financial aid and careers.

Student Support Services helps students by providing academic and personal support, as well as exposure to cultural events.

High School Upward Bound is geared toward Montgomery County high school students planning to become first-generation college students, providing academic support and exposure to cultural events.

Tri-County Upward Bound serves high school students in the rural Middle Tennessee counties of Stewart, Houston and Cheatham. It provides the same services as High School Upward Bound for the students in these three counties.

Veterans Upward Bound helps college-bound veterans who need refresher courses before continuing their education.

During the open house, TRIO representatives will be on hand to answer questions about the TRIO programs and services, and program participants will share their experiences.
