The first premiere of the concert was “Contemplations,” written by world-renowned composer Anthony Plog, who was present for the special event.

Scored by Plog for Flugelhorn and Wind Ensemble, the piece was performed as a solo by Richard Steffen, trumpet professor at APSU. Little did Steffen know that the masterpiece he was presenting was written in his honor and in celebration of his 25-year teaching career.

According to Wolynec, Plog was commissioned to write “Contemplations” for Steffen. And to honor their teacher, Steffen's students funded half of the commission. The remainder was paid by the APSU Department of Music and Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts. -- Dennie B. Burke
