Established in the spring of 2005, the Howell C. Smith Jr. and Sr. Endowment Fund totaled more than $2 million. Dr. Sherry Hoppe, president of APSU, is grateful for the Smiths' generous contributions.

She said, “Red Smith and Howell Smith will never personally see the large numbers of students who are benefiting from the endowment they created through their estate, but I expect they had a vision for what their gift might accomplish. They must have known countless lives would be changed by having an opportunity to attend college. This year's scholarship recipients are just the beginning of the perpetual legacy of the estate plan of these two highly respected community members. I hope other community members will follow their example.”

APSU has developed a detailed plan through 2010, on how Smith scholarships will be awarded. For the 2006-07 school year, in addition to the $20,000 renewable scholarships, the endowment will award two new scholarships at $3,000 each, 74 scholarships at $1,000 each, 44 scholarships for non-traditional students at $1,000 each, 22 one-time only scholarships for freshman and eight one-time only scholarships for special needs students.
