Last week at a meeting of Student Government Association (SGA) presidents from all Tennessee Board of Regents institutions, the SGA president from Austin Peay State University was elected chair of the group.

For this academic year, Nick Pitts, a senior mass communication major from Clarksville, will preside at meetings of these student leaders from community colleges and the six universities within the TBR system.

“What I realized right off the bat was the diversity of the group,” said Pitts. “These are SGA presidents (who) are totally different than you would expect. Some were nontraditional.”

The group discussed issues of interest to students on their respective campuses, including smoking policies and a possible referendum for green power.

After hearing from the TBR student regent and the TBR vice chancellor of academic affairs, the SGA presidents planned future meetings and a March 2007 retreat.

“It was a productive meeting. And it was really cool to represent you all,” Pitts said. -- Dennie B. Burke
