Orchestra Concert featuring Gomez Sunday

The Austin Peay State University Department of Music and the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts will sponsor a concert.

The APSU Orchestra Concert will begin at 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 5 in the Music/Mass Communication Building Concert Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

Alvaro Gomez, assistant professor of music and orchestra director, will conduct the concert. The orchestra will perform pieces such as Entry March of the Boyars by Johan Halvorsen, Symphony No. 7 in A major by L. V. Beethoven and Zampa by Louis Joseph Herold.

Gomez was the first prize winner of the "Jeunesse Musical" competition of Latin America in 1970 and the "Japan Foundation Prize” in 1982. He was the recipient of the Fulbright Foundation Award in 1987. Now, Gomez is recognized worldwide as one of the most brilliant violinists emerging from the P. I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Moscow.

He has been concert master of the Chilean Philharmonic Orchestra, Graunke Symphony Orchestra in Germany and the Chilean National Symphony, as well as the following in the U.S.: the Arkansas Symphony, the Brevard Symphony, the Orlando Symphony Orchestra and the Bach Festival Orchestra.

He has performed as a violin and viola soloist with orchestras and in chamber music in some of the most important music centers in the world, including Europe, the U.S., Canada, China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Israel and Central and South America.
