With the help of a transfer student, Austin Peay State University has launched a new honor society for students who transfer to the University.

The Gamma Alpha chapter of the Tau Sigma National Honor Society was established at APSU on Dec. 18, 2009. One of three chapters in Tennessee and 70 nationwide, the organization recognizes and promotes the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students.

Currently, the chapter is preparing a formal induction ceremony for new members, scheduled for 5 p.m., March 30 in the Morgan University Center Ballroom. Keynote speaker will be APSU President Tim Hall.

Megan Mitchell, transfer coordinator at APSU and chapter adviser, said 188 transfer students have been invited to be charter members for the Gamma Alpha chapter. Membership into Tau Sigma is conferred by invitation only.

One of those new members has been helping to organize the local chapter. Deanna Carter, a junior history major who transferred to APSU last fall from Nashville State Community College, said she hopes Tau Sigma will serve as a support network for all students who transfer to APSU.

“We plan to enlist help from our members to assist transfer students during Summer Welcome (APSU's new student orientation session) and act as ambassadors for them,” she said. “I think this chapter will help them to bridge the gap between the former school and APSU.”

Candidacy for membership in the Gamma Alpha chapter of Tau Sigma is granted to those students who have transferred to APSU having completed at least one year at a prior institution and earned at least a 3.5 grade-point average or placed in the top 20 percent of all incoming transfer students during their first term.
