Lady Govs win third consecutive OVC tourney title; Armistead named MVP

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay womens basketball team opened the second half with a 15-0 run and pulled away from eight-seed Murray State, winning 75-54 in the Ohio Valley Conference tournaments first round. The Lady Govs, the OVCs undefeated regular-season champion, improves to 25-3 this season while Murray State sees its season end with an 8-20 mark.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — Austin Peay women's basketball team opened the second half with a 15-0 run and pulled away from eight-seed Murray State, winning 75-54 in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament's first round. The Lady Govs, the OVC's undefeated regular-season champion, improves to 25-3 this season while Murray State sees its season end with an 8-20 mark.

Murray State kept close through a majority of the first half, forcing four ties and three lead changes in the opening 12:08. However, Kera Bergeron's jumper with 7:52 remaining gave the Lady Govs the lead for good, 18-16. Austin Peay would extend that lead to nine points, 29-20, with 4:32 remaining. After a pair of Murray State free throws that cut the margin to seven points, 29-22, with 4:14 remaining, the Lady Govs closed the half with a 7-0 run, taking a 36-22 lead into the break.

Austin Peay out-shot Murray State, 64.0-32.0 percent, both teams shooting 25 times — APSU made 16 first-half field goals while MSU made just eight. Gerlonda Hardin scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the opening period. Beth Schnakenberg led Murray State with seven points.

The Lady Govs broke open the game early in the second half with their opening 15-0 run, and held a 51-22 lead with 17:01 remaining. Murray State would get back within 19, 69-50, with 3:17 remaining but Austin Peay closed out the game with a 6-4 run to push the lead back to 21 points at the final horn.

Hardin finished the game with 18 points and 12 rebounds, posting her season's 12th double-double. Ashley Haynes added 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists. The duo of Hardin and Haynes finished the game 16-of-18 from the field, both players going 8-of-9. Brooke Armsitead and Kera Bergeron each chipped in 11 points. Nine Lady Govs scored in the contest.

Megan Fuqua scored 11 points, all in the second half, leading Murray State. Schnakenberg was held to two second-half points and finished the game with nine points.

The Lady Govs advance to the 2003 OVC tournament semifinals against an opponent to be determined. That contest will be a noon, Friday contest at Nashville's Gaylord Entertainment Center.

NOTES: The win was the Lady Govs fourth consecutive first-round victory and seventh overall in tournament play... Austin Peay extended its winning streak to 20 games overall and 13 games at home… The Lady Govs are now 11-1 this season when Hardin records a double-double and 22-3 during her three-year career… Ashley Haynes, this week's OVC “Player of the Week,” has averaged 25.0 points per game in her last three games.
