Austin Peay's track team competed against four other teams in its first meet of the indoor track and field season last Sunday in Murfreesboro.

The Lady Govs have been conditioning since September and training since October in preparation for this meet. “All of the girls have improved since the beginning of the year,” says Head Coach Yvonne Lowe. “We are doing well and working hard.”

Lowe expects good things from her returnees, especially Sherlonda Johnson, Clinnette Moon and Cicely Sullivan. As for the newcomers, Lowe is interested in Charminique Ray, Tia Hendricks and Kaylee Yago, an APSU soccer player.

“Kaylee trained with us some last season,” Lowe says, “but she was going back and forth between track and soccer. She's more focused now. Last year, she was running the mile in about six minutes; she should be well under that now.”

Twins Denise and Mary Honea are two other newcomers that will be participating in their first track meet. The twins, who ran cross-country at McEwen High School, will compete in both the 3000-meter and the mile events.

Austin Peay will not resume action again until the middle of January.

“I am trusting the girls to keep up their hard work, because even if just one person doesn't, it hurts the whole team,” Lowe says. “The indoor season is so quick—the conference meet is in February. We only have one really solid month of meets, and we can't afford to get behind.”
