The Lady Govs had a 3.369 grade-point average for the year. During the Spring 2004 semester the volleyball team posted a 3.409 GPA, second best of the athletic department's 17 units. Nine of the 11 team members were named to the athletics director's honor roll and five earned additional recognition on the Dean's List.

That followed a fall semester during which they posted a 3.312 GPA, third overall in the department. Nine players were named to the athletics director's honor roll, three to the Dean's list and two players (Cindy Wall and Julie Burkhalter) posted perfect 4.0 GPAs.

“I'm extremely proud of the young ladies on our team,” says Head Volleyball Coach Cheryl Holt. “This obviously shows they have a great deal of dedication and pride in their academic performance. Also, a good deal of the credit has to go to Dr. Johnnie Smith (Austin Peay athletic academic coordinator) for her help. This award speaks volumes for our athletics department and the University.”

The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors college and high school programs that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. Forty-six of Division I's 312 schools women's volleyball were recognized, including five members of the Ohio Valley Conference: Austin Peay, Jacksonville State, Morehead State, Southeast Missouri and Tennessee-Martin.

It is the second time in the past three seasons the Lady Govs have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award, having won the award following the 2001-2002 academic year.
