At Hoppe's request, ‘retirement' party to be scholarship fundraiser

As the July 31 retirement of Austin Peay State University President Sherry Hoppe approaches, several people have asked to host events to acknowledge her accomplishments at the University.

After much consideration, Hoppe has requested that all efforts be blended into one communitywide event, with proceeds to go toward the Sherry and Bob Hoppe Scholarship Endowment, which friends initiated two years ago.

A farewell dinner for Hoppe and her husband, Bob, is slated for Thursday, May 17 in the Morgan University Center Ballroom. There will be a 6:30 p.m. reception in the Jenkins Gallery with dinner at 7 p.m. The evening's activities will include a few brief remarks along with the opportunity for everyone to write or videotape personal messages to the Hoppes.

Roy Gregory, executive director for University Advancement, said, “Dr. Hoppe is the consummate fundraiser on behalf of Austin Peay students. Even now, she views her retirement as a way to raise money for academic scholarships.

“Her friends and colleagues can pay tribute to Dr. Hoppe by providing scholarship money and educational opportunities to countless students for generations to come.”

Faculty and staff invitations to the Hoppe Retirement Scholarship Dinner will be issued through campus mail. For more information, telephone 7127. -- Dennie B. Burke
