APSU's baseball team salvaged its stay at the Aces' Diamond Classic with a 6-3 victory against host Evansville on a snowy Saturday.
Austin Peay (8-6) opened the game with its first three batters reaching base. Junior Cody Youngblood led things off with a single, junior Will Hogue followed with another single and senior Jared Walker finished the run with a walk. Youngblood scored on a double play, and Houge followed him across the plate on junior Chris Poynter's RBI-single, giving Austin Peay a two-run lead. The Govs added to that with a third run that Youngblood pushed across with his RBI-single.
Evansville (14-5) would fight back with three home runs off Austin Peay starter Devin Thomas, but they only managed to tie the game, 3-3, after five innings.
The Govs broke the tie in the seventh with a three-run burst. Poynter pushed a pair of runs across with his two-RBI double, and senior Jake Peterson added the third run on his RBI triple. Junior Brad Daniel came on in relief and shut down the Purple Aces in the final three innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three for his first career save.
Thomas (2-2) evened his record with a quality start, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks in six-plus innings while striking out five. Poynter led the Govs with a 2-for-3, 3 RBI effort. Youngblood, Walker and Peterson also had two-hit performances as Austin Peay rapped out 11 hits.
Austin Peay stays on the road with a 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 15, contest at Lipscomb.
