Football Govs hit field for “spring” practice

Austin Peays football team began spring practice Thursday, Feb. 26, in what is generally believed the earliest spring start ever.

The Governors, close to 70 players strong, hope to have 12 practices finished before spring break (March 20-28).

APSU Football Coach Carroll McCray, in his second season as head coach, is looking forward to getting his players back on the field for the first time since early November.
We are really going to be hard on the guys to make sure they are doing the little things the right way, he says.

The Govs coaching staff is a little shorthanded. Quarterbacks Coach Adam Caine has accepted a position at Samford, while Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach Ken Jones recently had eye surgery that will keep him out temporarily. That leaves offensive duties up to Bob Ateca and McCray, who will coach the tight ends and offensive line during the interim. Meanwhile, Defensive Coordinator and Linebacker Coach Steve Haywood, Secondary Coach Granville Eastman and Line Coach Bill Noll return on the other side of the football.
