Some state legislators are questioning the Tennessee Board of Regents proposal to hire a new, six-figure executive vice president for Tennessee State University during a time of state financial crisis. The new official, expected to be named within the next 60 days, would put the TSU Foundation and other financial management problems in the hands of the executive vice president. State auditors found the TSU Foundation ran up a $2.6 million deficit in some accounts when TSU President James Hefner awarded scholarships without making sure the foundation could fund them. John D. Petersen, provost and executive vice president at the University of Connecticut, has been named incoming president of the University of Tennessee. He will start by July 1. (The Tennessean, 4/21/04)
