Chinese ceramics artist to visit APSU

Chinese ceramics teapot artist Gu Meiqun will be at Austin Peay State University from April 9-20.

The visits are sponsored by the APSU Department of Art and the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts.

Gu Meiqun will lead a workshop from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the week of April 9-13 and 9 a.m.-noon, Tuesday and Thursday of that week. From April 16-20, there will be an open forum with students and the public.

Gu Meiqun will lead a workshop from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the week of April 9-13 and 9 a.m.-noon, Tuesday and Thursday of that week. From April 16-20, there will be an open forum with students and the public.

There will be an exhibition of Meiqun's work at the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center from April 10-22, with an opening reception scheduled from 6-8 p.m.

Also, Meiqun will have a public discussion of her work at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 18 in the Crouch Gallery of the Customs House Museum along with APSU Professor of Art Ken Shipley, who currently has an exhibition there.

Meiqun was born in 1966 in Yixing, China, considered the capital of pottery-making. She has traveled extensively in the U.S. and Asia, giving presentations and workshops on her work. Currently on tour in the U.S., she has lectured and demonstrated at West Virginia University, San Francisco Asian Art Museum and the New Jersey Art Center of America. She also has been invited to Taiwan ChiNan University to lecture on the aesthetics and appreciation of Yixing purple sand teapot art.

She is a member of the Chinese Arts and Crafts Association, the Capital Art branch committee of the Jiangsu Provincial Arts and Crafts Association and the standing committee of China Yixing Sand Culture Research Committee.
