Austin Peay State University's Child Learning Center has earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)the nation's leading organization of early childhood professionals.

“We're proud to be accredited by NAEYC and recognized for our commitment to reaching the highest professional standards,” said Rena Miller, director of APSU's Child Learning Center.

“NAEYC accreditation lets families in our University and community know that children in our program are getting the best care and early learning experience.”

The Child Learning Center provides childcare and early childhood education for the children of APSU faculty, staff and students as well as the larger community. The main center, located in the Sexton Building on Eighth Street, serves children from six weeks to four years. The Pre-K classroom, in the Emerald Hill Family Housing Complex, serves 4- and 5-year-old children.

According to Miller, APSU's TECTA (Tennessee Early Childhood Training Alliance) staff helped the Child Learning Center attain accreditation. “TECTA funded our application and gave the center money for much-needed renovations. Linda Sitton (TECTA director) is a great supporter of the center.”

In the 20 years since NAEYC accreditation began, it has become widely recognized as a sign of high quality in early childhood education programs.

Dr. Mark Ginsberg, executive director of NAEYC, said, “By earning accreditation, Austin Peay's Child Learning Center has become a leader in a national effort to raise the quality of early childhood education to help give children a better start.”

NAEYC created its accreditation program in 1985 to set professional standards for early childhood education and help families identify high-quality childcare and early education programs.
