A book by Dr. Michele Butts, associate professor of history at Austin Peay, has been nominated for the Elizabeth Genovese Best Book Award given annually by The Historical Society.

Butts' “Galvanized Yankees on the Upper Missouri: The Face of Loyalty” also was reviewed in the April 2004 edition of The American Historical Review. Sherry L. Smith of Southern Methodist University writes: “ … Butts has produced a solid history of this interesting chapter in Civil War and western military history. It will justifiably become the first book to which all future students of ‘galvanized yankees' will turn.”

The book has garnered nominations for the Western History Association's Robert M. Utley Award for the best book on the military history of the American frontier, the Colorado Historical Society's Barbara Sudler Award and the Berkshire Conference First Book Prize.

Butts started her career at Austin Peay in 1993. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees at APSU and her doctorate at the University of New Mexico.
