Leading wire-to-wire, APSU's women's basketball team posted an 85-73 Ohio Valley Conference victory over Eastern Illinois Jan. 8. Austin Peay improved to 5-8 overall and 1-1 in league play.
The Lady Govs opened with baskets from freshman center Kellea Reeves and junior forward Alicia Watson to take a 4-0 lead in the opening minutes. Eastern Illinois would get within one point, 9-8, with 13:59 remaining but Austin Peay responded with an 11-1 scoring run to take a double-digit lead, 20-9, with 10:46 left. Junior Kera Bergeron, who was on the bench at the game's start, had two three-point field goals during the decisive scoring burst.
Bergeron led the Lady Govs with 23 points, making 7-of-9 from three-point range. Reeves, making her first collegiate start, finished with a perfect shooting night, going 4-of-4 from the field and 2-of-2 at the free throw line.
Austin Peay won the shooting battle, shooting a season-best 50.0 percent (34-of-68) from the field, including a season-best 48.1 percent (13-of-27) effort from three-point range.
Austin Peay continues its four-game homestand with a 5:15 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 13, contest against Eastern Kentucky.
