Art student showcases challenges, self in exhibit

For Marie Riccitelli, coming to Austin Peay State University to complete her art degree was a goal that she set for herself.

I have always felt that, no matter where I am in my life, I need to challenge myself, she says. With the creation of art, the challenge is always there.

The senior art major will present an exhibit, titled Simply Myself, set to open Monday, Nov. 19. From 7-9 p.m., a reception will precede the opening of the exhibit.

The senior art major will present an exhibit, titled “Simply Myself,” set to open Monday, Nov. 19. From 7-9 p.m., a reception will precede the opening of the exhibit.

The exhibit, part of a senior art course that is the capstone of the student's art degree, will be open to the public for viewing from 2-6 p.m., Nov. 20 and 21.

Most of the works are self-portraits that, Riccitelli says, “started out on a
small scale but some ended up being larger than I have ever done anything before.”

The works range from the use of soft pastels to washes of India ink and watercolor.

“Something I learned staring at myself in the mirror for all those hours was that it went beyond looking at the surface me and seeing much more into my inner self,” she says.
